The INC Distinguished Fellowship

Utilizing lesson study and laboratory classrooms as learning tools

The fellowship is composed of 3 parts throughout the academic year:

Part 1

Weeklong Summer Institute

Connect with fellow educators to think about research + practice.

Part 2

Three Full-Day Lesson Studies

Bring collaboration into the classroom and apply new knowledge.

Part 3

Three Mentoring Sessions

Refine your learning, tailored to your unique students & inquiry goals.

Beyond the Fellowship

After completing the fellowship, participants will be recognized as INC mentors and invited to showcase their classrooms to local teachers, administrators, policymakers, and researchers.

As part of our regional network of laboratory classrooms, mentors will have ongoing opportunities for learning and community.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our keystone experience is the year-long INC Distinguished Fellowship. Through the fellowship, educators participate in a weeklong summer institute, three full-day lesson studies, and three individual mentoring sessions. If you are interested in other ways to get involved, please reach out to us! We offer tailored professional development and consulting in collaboration with schools, districts, and educational organizations.

  • Our 2025 pilot cohort will be able to participate free of charge through funding from The Bay Area Writing Project. This will cover books, $500 stipends, snacks, and substitute teachers for those in districts that are not able to provide them. Fellows may also apply for 3 continuing education credits.

  • Interested educators are invited to submit a brief application in the spring for participation starting in the summer. Please contact jane.weiss@stanford.edu with any questions.

The National Writing Project

A nonprofit dedicated to supporting educators on all levels. The PEBC developed the Learning Labs model, which situate teacher learning right alongside student learning as the nuances of planning, instruction, and assessment come together.

INC Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in three full-day Learning Labs as inspired by the PEBC model.
